A RAPPER’S SONG ABOUT HIS MOTHER’S ADDICTION GETS SIX MILLION VIEWS

Mark Henriquez, like a lot of artists, turned to music as an escape from the reality of his home life. His mother was addicted to meth, so he retreated to his room and started plotting a future in hip-hop. Now a song he crafted about his mother’s addiction, All For You (My Moms Addiction Story), has gotten six million views on Facebook.

As the OC Register reports, Henriquez’s mother, Ruby Lanz, has now been sober for twelve years, and she appears at the beginning of the video, telling the viewer, “Because of my addiction I lost my job of 16 years, I lost my kids’ respect, I lost my apartment. Henriquez, a native of Santa Ana, CA who goes by the stage name of Gremlin, says that the subject of his mother’s addiction was “something I’ve wanted to talk about for a long time. That for sure is the big component of my life and what gives me drive. I think it’s actually made me do better. I’ve always worked super hard at everything because I have to break the cycle.”

After losing everything, including the trust of her children, Lanz turned her life around through rehab. After staying in a sober living home, it took her two years to get a job and an apartment, and she married a man she met in an NA meeting.

Henriquez is clearly proud that his mother turned her life around, and she says, “I learned that I inspired Mark not to give up. That makes me happy. Something good came out of something bad.”
